Millions of Americans have Alzheimer’s or other dementias. As the size and proportion of the U.S. population age 65 and older continue to increase, the number of Americans with Alzheimer’s or other dementias will grow. This number will escalate rapidly in coming years, as the population of Americans age 65 and older is projected to grow from 55 million in 2019 to 88 million by 2050. The baby boom generation has already begun to reach age 65 and beyond, the age range of greatest risk of Alzheimer’s dementia; in fact, the oldest members of the baby boom generation turn age 73 in 2019.

This webinar will present a general overview of what dementia is along with some current nutrition trend in prevention and management to prevent and management malnutrition and support quality of life. The Alzheimer’s Association 2018 Dementia Care Practice Recommendations related to food, nutrition and dining will be identified along with practical suggestions of ways to enhance the dining experience for residents and caregivers.

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe the MIND Diet and current nutrition recommendations to prevent dementia.
  • Identify the Alzheimer's Association 2018 Dementia Care Practice Recommendations with food and dining.
  • Present 5 Phases with a Person-Centered Approach for Mealtime and Improved Outcomes.
